When it comes to the health of your teeth, cavities are enemy number one. The smallest cavity can grow into a major cavity, eventually penetrating the root canals and threatening the life of the tooth. Fortunately, there are a number of preventive and general dentistry treatments to help keep cavities at bay, as well as many exceptional restorative dentistry treatments designed to reconstruct teeth that have been structurally compromised by cavities. We are pleased to offer a comprehensive range of these treatment options for cavities at our Salt Lake City general, restorative, and cosmetic dentistry practice, Eagle Gate Dental.
Led by experienced dentist James Wright, the Eagle Gate Dental team is able to diagnose cavities from their earliest stages and provide timely treatments that stop them in their tracks. Patients emerge with renewed oral health and smiles that look as beautiful and natural as they are healthy. We use only the finest materials in our restorations, so patients can rest assured that their results will last for years with proper at-home oral hygiene regimens and regular visits to our offices for cleanings and exams.
Don’t take chances with your precious smile. Even if you feel that your mouth is in perfect health, the American Dental Association recommends that you visit the dentist at least twice a year for professional cleanings and thorough oral exams. Doing so is the best way to prevent cavities and treat small cavities before they have the chance to spread. Schedule your initial visit to Eagle Gate Dental today.
How are cavities treated?
Regardless of the size of the cavity, cavity treatment begins with the removal of any damaged tooth structure. This is necessary to preventing the spread of decay. Once the damaged portion of the tooth has been removed, the objective is to restore the tooth to its original shape and size using high-quality dental materials. The type of restoration used depends on the amount of natural tooth material remaining:
- Tooth-colored filling: This represents the most conservative treatment option and is used in the treatment of a very small cavity. Modern tooth-colored fillings are as strong and durable as their silver amalgam counterparts; however, they blend seamlessly into the tooth and are virtually impossible to distinguish with the naked eye.
- An inlay or an onlay: Made of porcelain, an inlay is crafted to replace missing tooth structure that occurs within the cusps (the pointed tops) of a tooth, while an onlay extends to replace at least one of the cusps.
- A dental crown: If there is insufficient remaining tooth structure to support a filling, an inlay, or an onlay, Dr. Wright will cover the entire visible surface area of the tooth with a custom-crafted dental crown. Modern dental crowns are made to look entirely natural while restoring strength and structural integrity to damaged teeth and protecting them from further harm.
